WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD

GOLD & SILVER HISTORICAL TOUR
(Guests meet in the hotel lobby at 8:30 a.m.)

Guests will be escorted by a local historian through the capitol of Nevada, Carson City, and on to historic Virginia City, once one of the 19th century’s top silver and gold producing centers. It was in its heyday a bawdy and bustling Mecca for miners and a support cast of sinners and saints, churches and saloons, hotels and Chinese laundries. It stands today much as it did then: dusty streets and wooden boardwalks, false-fronted buildings, a church, house, or saloon here and there. And above it, a sentinel over the city, the tailings, and the desert, is Boot Hill, final resting place for those denizens who, for a brief period, turned this bleak and barren landscape into Virginia City, one of the most famous cities of the Old West. There will be plenty of time for touring the historical sites, shopping and lunch at the Gold Hill Hotel, the oldest hotel in Nevada.

The Virginia and Truckee is by far the most famous of all American short line railroads. As many as 45 trains a day arrived and departed Virginia City. President U.S. Grant and dignitaries the world over rode in the ornate coaches of Virginia & Truckee. Completed in 1869, trains hauled millions of dollars of gold and silver ore from the rich mines of Virginia City.

Take a 35 minute excursion back into the Old West. Journey over the original Virginia & Truckee Railroad from Virginia City, through tunnel 4 to Gold Hill, Nevada. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Savor the spectacular mountain scenery. Hear the conductor narrate the amazing history of the Comstock while the train chuffs past the famous Comstock Bonanza mine ruins.
